ANNOUNCING the 2026 Ted Herbert Community Big Band AUDITIONS!

Auditions will be held Sunday, January 18, 2026 from 1-3pm (by appointment)*

The Ted Herbert Community Big Band provides an opportunity for students ages 13 - 19, to rehearse, perform and learn in a large ensemble setting while being mentored by professional working musicians. In this setting, students will have the chance for in-depth study and performance of more advanced repertoire than they would encounter in most public school music programs. In addition to performing alongside our professional mentors, students will acquire valuable skills in advanced jazz interpretation and improvisation, effective and efficient rehearsal techniques, professional conduct, individual responsibility, and advanced techniques for their chosen instrument. This builds individual confidence and leadership skills that the students can take back to their school music programs, extending these benefits to classrooms all over New Hampshire.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Prepared Selection: The section we want you to play is clearly marked. Quarter note = 144-160. Download the prepared selection HERE.

  2. Bb or F blues improv.

  3. Sight Reading

    BASS PLAYERS: There's nothing prepared for bass - we just want to know if you can walk over a blues progression and rhythm changes with good time and feel.

SCHEDULE:

  • Rehearsals: 2/15, 3/15, 3/29, 4/19, 5/17, 5/31 (Sundays 6-8pm)

  • Performance: Sunday, June 7, 2026 at 3pm

INSTRUCTORS:

Director – Thomas Salyers / Additional instructors will be added as needed based on the support needed by the Big Band students.

TUITION:

$100.00 Tuition for those who pass the audition and are offered a seat in the ensemble. Auditioning is free and open to both Ted Herbert students and non-students. Scholarship assistance is available.
